All things Shopify and commerce
WARNING: When you create a return label through Shopify, check the tracking number BEFORE you email the prepaid shipping labels to your customers! I created a return label through Shopify yesterday. When I checked the tracking number today, it said that it got delivered on October 30, 2020 in Washington (we're located in Texas). My customer emailed me a picture of the box with the prepaid shipping on it, and it was exactly the same.
This already happened twice in a week, and I'm so upset because I'm never going to get the returned items to resell again. I've chatted with Shopify about this issue, and they said they're working on it. They're just confused as I am about this. I just wanted to give everyone a heads-up.

This is an accepted solution.
I've had many problems with wonky/used return trackings as well. A way around this- I just keep creating more return labels until I see an "un-used" one. What I'm wondering though- do we only get charged for the ones that are actually scanned/used? Or does USPS charge us for any return label created. Any help is appreciated!

We only get charged for the ones used. Luckily the item I created a return label for was shipped back to me. But I had to call usps everyday for tracking updates.
This is via USPS in the states or? Your saying that the tracking number is a duplicate that's already been used? Thanks
Yes, merchants can purchase USPS prepaid shipping labels for returns on Shopify.
Gotcha...just wanted to confirm you meant USPS in the states. We use shop exclusively for return labels and haven't had any issues, but will keep an eye on it.
Unrelated, but we've been having issues with orders NOT indexing when searched for in the orders dashboard. I.e you place an order, pay, processes, all good and then 2 weeks from now, you still haven't received what you ordered. You contact us, we search for the order and it doesn't come up (both by name, order number etc)....except the customer furnishes the order confirmation email, so obviously it must exist!? Only way to find has been to use the arrow button in orders page to scroll and scroll until getting to the day the person ordered...low and behold the order is there unfulfilled!
Point of mentioning above is that I'm convinced they've done SW upgrades and there's some serious bugs/issues with things that should be "table stakes." We open ticket and it gets "fixed", 3 weeks later, same things starts happening again...rinse and repeat.
Please keep me updated. This just happened to me. This is a disaster
Happened to us this week.
This happened to me as well. I generated a return shipping label in Shopify on Jan 21, 2021 and my customer used the label to return the product to me in Chicago, IL, but when I look at the USPS tracking - it shows that it delivered in Provo, UT on December 22, 2020. USPS won't allow a claim to be filed, because according to them the package delivered. What are we supposed to do to get our package back??

I just had this happen to me and i'm so upset. Is my product just gone now?? I'm not sure of what to do.
I'm not sure if once it is scanned in it goes back to a normal tracking number, I just keep creating new ones until I get one that isn't used yet. You really won't know until it's done with the tracking process but for future always check the tracking before sending out to be sure.
Since we're not charged until the return label is in-transit, the only solution to do this problem is to keep requesting return label until you find unused tracking number. If your customer sends you the return, you'll still receive it even with the old tracking number. But I don't use it when someone wants to return an expensive item anymore because it's not reliable - I manually create UPS return labels for high-ticket items.
