Not your usual shipping question.... (I searched)

Greetings all, I've spent a number of hours searching and I'm no closer to an answer, so let me get to it! I am trying to wrap my head around shipping. Here's the deal:

  • We received an order for 6 units
  • We ship through USPS and shipping cost the customer $18.04
  • We have three kinds of boxes (though only two at the time)
  • 1) small: holds one unit
  • 2) medium: holds two units
  • 3) large: holds six units (but wasn't available at time of sale)
  • We split the order of into three medium size boxes, printed labels and dropped them off at USPS

Now, what I don't understand is whether or not I incur any charges for breaking the order up into three boxes? Does the amount paid by the customer ($18.04) cover shipping no matter how many boxes the order is shipped in, and no matter what size they are? Meaning I could ship six small boxes with one unit each, or ship three medium boxes with two units each, or ship one large box with 6 units?

Thanks much!
