While only using PayPal is not necessarily a bad idea it will be closing off part of the market for you. As popular as PayPal has become, not everyone has a PayPal account and our PayPal Express checkout does require your customer to sign in to their PayPal account in order to checkout. Some people simply prefer paying by credit card and when they see that this is not an option on your store they may abandon the checkout altogether to find a similar product elsewhere. 

 

I would highly recommend that you take a look at the available payment gateways for your location here to maximize your conversions.

Hi,

I'm brand new to Shopify, setting up my store now. I've had the store almost 9 years on StoresOnline, and I'm moving to Shopify. With StoresOnline, people can opt to pay by Credit Card OR Paypal. It sounds from what you are saying that the two are mutually exclusive? It's one or the other?

Good question. Sorry if it was unclear. Yes, you can have PayPal along with another credit card processor. PayPal will allow your customers to pay with their PayPal account while the second payment gateway will take card transactions. You can take a look at the payment gateway options that are available to you, here.

Hi Bo,
Thanks very much for the reply. I noticed that the company I have been
using for the past 8 years -- Propay -- is not on your list of credit card
processors so I called them and they said "We are not affiliated with
Shopify." Thus will end a lovely 8-year relationship. I see a list of
options but does Shopify recommend a company for the credit card
processing? Does it have a fav?

Thanks for getting back to me! I would have to say that Shopify Payments, our own credit card processor would be the best. Shopify Payments is the simplest way to accept payments online. It eliminates the hassle of setting up a third-party payment provider or merchant account and having to enter the credentials into Shopify. With Shopify Payments, you're automatically set up to accept all major payment methods as soon as you create your Shopify store.

Thank you Bo. Does Shopify Payments have a card reader and/or an app which
work with a tablet or phone so we can take cards when we sell products, for
example, at trade shows?

Great question! Shopify does come with a Point of Sale app which you could use at trade shows etc. You can read up on how all of this works right here. We also do have compatible hardware such as card readers, all of which can be found in our hardware store here.
