Question about changing domains

I bought my domain along with my Shopify subscription, and renew it each year that way also.  Due to the way my business has done over the last two years, I'm seriously considering a rebranding effort in the later half of this year.  I'm wondering how difficult it is to change the domains.  Has anyone done that?

To be clear, I'm not talking about changing from an external domain (godaddy, for example) to  Shopify.  I'm changing from one domain bought through Shopify to another domain bought through Shopify.

Would I have to cancel the old one and start a new subscription for the new one?  Can I maintain ownership of the old one with no store attached to it?

Hey Sharon,

I'm Ann, from the team here at Shopify :)

If you're just looking to get a new domain for your store, then you have the right idea! Just hop into your domain settings, and you'll see the option to buy a new domain there. You can also see the steps laid out on this page in our Shopify Manual.

Once you buy the new domain, if you want to start using it, you can assign it to be your primary domain. Then no matter what other domain someone uses to get to your store, they will be redirected and will only see your new primary domain. The steps on that are here

As for your old domain, you can stop it from renewing by following these steps. Or you can continue to renew it, and just point it somewhere else! What you do with it is up to you!

I hope this helps! If you have any more questions or concerns feel free to reach out to us on this thread :)

Have a great one,
Ann

Hi Ann, thanks for replying!  Can I have the old domain point to the new one so that they both go to my Shopify shop?

One other question, would this be effectively two Shopify subscriptions?  Or just the one subscription still and paying for two domain registrations?

Hey Sharon,

Yup, you can keep the old domain pointed to your Shopify store, then when you set the new domain as the primary domain, people will be redirected to that new domain and they'll be brought to your Shopify store directly. So essentially, both your new and your old domain will be bringing people to your Shopify store.

As for your second question, you will only have to pay one Shopify store subscription, but you will need to pay for two domain registrations if you wish to keep the old one up and running alongside the new one. These will be yearly payments, and you can see the pricing on this page in our Shopify Manual.

Let me know if that helps clear up all your questions!

Have a great one,
Ann

Hi

You Can Keep Both Domains But You Will Be Billed For Both , I Would Suggest Not To Purchase New One as Domain Age Matters in SEO Factor ;)

Good Luck
