I don't know if this is a stupid question, but is there anything wrong with uploading a picture to one website and then copying that link to other stores that you also own? In a normal circumstance this would be considered hotlinking but if all belongs to you is it a problem for Shopify? Will they even detect it?

This is an accepted solution.
It is something the team could detect but given they don't limit bandwidth usage you'll be fine. If you abuse the system with bad intent well that would be a different convo.
However linking across multiple shops has risk involved since those other shops would need the url hard coded in. By doing that it means any change to the url structure or the image could result in a broken image or at the very least an image that doesn't update to the latest version. So as long as you are ready to manually check for broken links and tweak it as needed i don't see an issue
