I am trying to remove tags from the Filter drop down in our very basic shop. Through a learning curve, our shop ended up with a MESS of tags and we'd like to remove them, but I can't find any way to do so.
What i've tried - I exported all products, removed and updated the product tags in the CSV file, then re-uploaded the same CSV, not changing anything else. On import i chose the option to overwrite existing products with the same handles. After importing under these conditions, all of the original tags are showing in the filter area on the front end.
Any help is appreciated.

In order for tags to be removed from the filter section and deleted from your store, they need to be fully removed from your admin. While a CSV is useful for creating & updating products, it can't delete tags or products which is why you're still facing this issue. That said, there is a way within the admin that you can remove the unwanted tags so that you can have the desired outcome.
For starters, you'll want to head over to your Products section in the admin. Once here, you'll want to select the small white checkbox that appears near the top of the first product.
Once you've selected this, you may need to select the "Select 50+ products in Store" option that appears in blue text on the right-hand side if you have more than 50 products. This ensures that all products are selected when processing the next step. Once you've got that selected, you'll want to click on "Actions" then "Remove Tags:"
Once done, this will open up a new box where you can either select recent tags or input the tags you wish to remove in the text box:
Once you've added/selected the required tags, you can select "Apply Changes" which should remove the tags from all of your products which in return should remove them from your filter menu.
If you've processed these steps and the tags still appear, then let me know as there may be an issue with how the store is caching old information. If that's the case, I can authenticate your account and process a flush to get the changes kicked in.
All the best,
Another way, if you consider using an app and paying an enormous amount of money for using it, is to use the Excelify.io app.
Among any data import/export/update features, there you can add/delete/replace tags using an import file.
Import the Excel file with the following columns:
And if you need to delete the tags, put the "Tags Command" as "DELETE".
If you need to add, use the "Tags Comand" as "MERGE".
And if you just need to set the tags to specific ones, use the "REPLACE" as the Tags Command.
Thank you Peter! I have done this with a couple dozen tags and they do still show in the Products Catalog filter list, and when I select one of the tags I've removed, products are still filtered, even after a full refresh.
For the moment, I would just like to confirm that the work I am doing (rather tedious) is working, and I'll proceed if so.
Is the process of flushing the cache very involved? Might the changes take effect overnight? If so, I can wait and see if the site refreshes on its own to save you the trouble.
I'm sorry to hear that the method I provide above didn't resolve the issue. In this case, I've gone ahead and sent you an email to the email we have listed on your account. If you wanted to follow up there then we can dive into this further to find a resolution!
All the best,
