Search Typos

Hello, I have a random question I can't seem to track down anywhere...

We sell headphones & earphones, some of the brands are difficult to spell.

How does Shopify handle typos, like if they wanted to search for "Klipsch Headphones" but typed "Kliptsch Headphones"

From my initial tests, it just returns "no results" ...this isn't very helpful, it's an e-commerce platform there is always some result.

Anyone have any experience with handling this?

Assuming there is no "Did you Mean... " on the Shopify search engine side of things...

If I were you I would use Javascript.

1. you can monitor what gets typed in the search box.

2. before they hit enter and submit a search, you intercept the search terms

3. for all the common mis-spelled words, do a simple correction

4. now submit the form..

Problem with mis-spelled words goes away somewhat...

I looked at another system that had a great feature. You could get reports on what people typed into the search box. You could then add those mis-spellings into a field on the product that was used in the search function. The example given to me was a candy store that had people typing "carmel" for "caramel". Would be a nice addition to shopify!

That would be pretty easy... to build as an App.

Welcome to Searchify: http://apps.shopify.com/searchify

We built this specifically to handle typos. It also tracks what people are searching on.

Couldn’t you create a URL rewrite table using the URL with “usable” results from the report in one column and the correct word in the URL (or a product URL) in the target column?

We just launched and I think we will be trying that.
