Hello everyone. First of all I am here for a signifigant problem, my business sells niche video game display enhancement products that we manufacture here in our shop.
Brief History: We migrated from the wordpress base several years ago due to a high congested, and overly convoluted system that actually caused the site to start running slower and slower. there were too many plugins and when the programmers updated the theme files, there was no coordination with the programmers of the plugins, and our website would actually crash or be disabled when themes would update. At one point we were wondering why we made 0 sales in a week, it seemed insane, and then we discovered it was due to a poorly tested theme update. WordPress, a great Utopian idea of integration and connectivity had become a Frankenstein monster of poorly tested and weakly connected systems, piled on top of piles of systems. in our view they had lost control.
Last Year: So we switched to shopify. Things have been much better. Although we still don't like that shopify intentionally hobbles their core system so we are forced to buy more and more plugins, and that is where shopify makes a lot of money. But we can live with that, as long as we're selling. And we are. We have added several sales channels to our site and they are working for us, they were easy to install and set up. Until I met the abomination of Google Shopping.
Today: We are mainly cleared up to 90% of our products to appear on google surfaces.
Right Now: the real problem now is how do I import all my products sizes and weights into google merchant center? As I understand it right now, the crawler import did not gather any of that information at all and none of our shipping policies. I don't really care about the policies. But do i seriously have to recreate, 1 by 1 , over 250 products?? Why can't this simple data be extracted from shopify data.
Please save me from having to do this manually. And if Shopify is listening, this is something you really should work on. please dont become another bloated wordpress.
If you are using Google Merchant Center Web Crawler, then all data you submit must be via the structured data.
Web Crawlers can't collect variants as far as I know.
I actually do not recommend using a web crawler due to its limitations.
If you want to extract data from Shopify to Google Merchant Center, you should use a purpose to build apps or data feed management tool, which is designed to submit product information. For example, my application supports importing variants, automatically maps variant options to a choice of the attribute you like. For example, if option 1 is size, map it to the size attribute.
Data feed management tools have a high level of functions for you to improve the quality of the data feed. Some tools are better than others.
However, if you do not want to use apps, and do things manually, then yes you will need to do it all yourself. As you already discovered, not easy.
If you want something free, search Shopify app store or use a spreadsheet.
When you use free things, you don't get much to work with, in terms of functions, support may be limited, compared to paid service, as you already experience, sometimes it's better to pay for something and invest your time in more productive things than manually managing a feed.
In any case, simply search, you will find lots of things.
