We are currently operating with 3 different Shopify stores (AU/INT/North American) as we have different fixed product prices depending on currency.
However, when you search our store name these three different websites/domain all come up as options - which is confusing for our customers. We would like a way that automatically redirects the customer to the relevant domain once their location is detected through their IP address.
Instead of having three different domains, we've seen other websites using Shopify that redirects with an aus prefix. How can we set this up?
Nick here from Shopify. Really good question!
Can you link one of the websites using the aus prefix as an example and I can look into it more for you please? I'm wondering if they had it custom made by a Shopify expert. It could be worth reaching out to an expert (Shopify Expert directory for custom domains) to see if this is something they would do. I'm aware of what it is, but wouldn't be 100% sure on how to get it set up personally.
Something else you could look into is using a Geolocation redirect app from the Shopify App Store. You can see some of the most popular geolocation apps below:
Hopefully, this helps and points you in the right direction for the best next steps!
All the best, Nick
Thanks for your reply.
An example of a website with the aus. prefix is: https://aus.moanabikini.com/
Thank you for the other suggestions. If using one of these apps, do we require multiple Shopify stores for each location?
Look forward to hearing from you!
No problem at all @em_123.
I think that's what these apps were made for in terms of sending people to a specific website based on the store location. I'm wondering if they can be used to send people to specific pages within one store also though. This is something that would be best answered by the app developers themselves as they would know best on each of their own apps. The contact details of each app developer are on the right-hand side of the app description in the Shopify app store.
If you want to control different fixed priced for products in 3 different markets(AU/INT/North America), I would suggest you still running 3 domains as it does give you the best flexibility controlling prices, shipping cost, and stock across markets.
To improve the user experience and auto direct your website visitors to related website based on their locations, here is one solution for you: Geo Targetly. Its particular Geo Redirect tool can detect your visitors' locations by IP and auto direct them based on their locations. For example, if you visitor is in Australia, and he goes to exampleshop.com, it will auto direct him to exampleshop.com.au. No confusion for your customers any more.
Hope it helps. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
I have a similar requirement but we are not ready to integrate the geolocation apps yet. As an alternate solution, is it possible to have a dropdown of locations (e.g. US, EU, AU) so that when a customer clicks on a specific location, we can redirect to a specific url which is on another domain (not on shopify)?
We were told that this is possble to do via custom HTML. Could you please advise on where/how we can set this up?
Can I ask why you aren't looking to add gelocation apps right now? I spoke to someone on our theme support team who mentioned that the drop-down idea is possible but would require some custom work on the back end of your store which would have a cost to it. This makes me think if going the app route could be the best way forward unless it's definitely not an option for you.
If you did want to explore something customized I would recommend looking into a Shopify Expert in the directory to see if you can an expert you resonate with to work with you.
thank you very much for your response. We are happy to add geotargeting apps but from what we have looked up, these apps appear to be expensive. We probably will integrate those at some point in the near future but perhaps not at this point unless there are low cost apps geotargeting apps available for small/startup companies like us?
Alternatively, for the time being, we are also ok with some solution where we could potentially hide our US based storefront to visitors from any other location in the world? Currently we have a website that we want to make is visible to the entire world but we have a storefront set up only for US (i.e. with USD currrency) and also our product line is going to differ based on other locations. So until we have a storefront ready for other countries, we want to be able to display our website to anyone in the world but hide our products/store-front for any visitor not associated with USD currency. In other words, say for visitors from canada, if our US website is example.com then we could have an entire copy of that website redirected to example.com.ca with the only exception that our storefront will be hidden for example.com.ca. Is this possible?
If this can be achieved with minor HTML code changes, we are happy to tackle that at our end if someone can guide us.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Ah, I understand.
A possible workaround for the time being to help with the alternative could be a lock style app such as Locksmith. Locksmith enables you to lock anything in your store from visitors with a range of different scenarios one of which is visiting from certain countries:
You can find some other apps similar to Locksmith here. If this doesn't seem to fit what you're looking for and you'd like to explore something customized with your HTML, I would say taking a look at working with some Shopify Experts about this. You can see the Expert directory here.
