Sitemap Changes and Frequency of Generation

Hi. I made some changes and my sitemap did not reflect the new handle. I since then put it back to the handle in the sitemap as not to completely mess up Google's indexing.

My question is how frequently does Shopify generate the sitemap? Why would I not see a new link in it - I thought it updates in real-time?

Additionally, the reason I made the changes to the handles is the collections/all page runs in parallel to a page I created for my complete collection called collections/cookbooks. I want to keep collections/cookbooks vs the all page. My sitemap does reflect the collections/cookbooks but somehow Google chose to pick up the all page which has no copy on it - only thumbnails of the collection.

Please advise how I can keep just my collections/cookbooks page. I followed instructions the wiki but they did not work.

Hi Guys,

I am having the same issue.

I have added products over a week ago and they are not being reflected in the sitemap.

Any help?

Same here. 4 links in my sitemap...in other words useless. Doesn't even include any product page links.

Hey everyone!

1. Sitemaps are being cached for about an hour. If you make any changes to your shop (e.g. delete a page or product, or change a handle that affects the URL) then the sitemap will get regenerated. It depends on Google how often they fetch the new sitemap information, but if you force to reload the sitemap you should see any changes reflected within an hour. In case you're seeing any issues with that, please submit a ticket and provide a few details on what you expected vs. what you observed.

2. The sitemap.xml file itself does not directly contain the links to your pages. Instead it acts as a "sitemap-index" referencing the 4 actual sitemaps for the different sections of your shop (products, collections, pages and blog articles):

If you follow one of those links (copy & paste the link into your browser bar), you will see the actual list of links:

In case you're noticing any issues with the sitemap it would be best to open a support ticket where we can look at each of your individual details.

That helps, thank you! Turns out there is a sitemap there after all. Have never seen one laid out like that...

Yea, this is actually the only way how you can have more than 50,000 links in a single sitemap. This was the main reason we started splitting them up into several more sitemaps:

If you're looking for a HTML Sitemap Page you can try this app: https://apps.shopify.com/generate-sitemap it regenerates every 24 hours to keep it up to date with your links. We've also put in place some template and layout options to control how many products are shown on one page.

Any feedback welcome!

Thanks Sam, the sitemap app you mentioned generates the HTML sitemap page – exactly what I was looking for!
