Thanks for getting in touch! Hybrid debit/credit cards are supported methods of payment, however they must be a VISA, Mastercard, or AMEX. It sounds like this is what you are working with, yes?
To clarify, are you seeing this "Unable to verify card" message when you add your method of payment or when you try to pay your bill? Have you successfully added your method of payment to Settings > Billing > Payment methods? If not, give that a try now and let me know if you receive a similar error.
That's my mistake, I read your original message to say you had a debit/credit VISA. At this time, it is not possible to use debit cards to pay for Shopify, which is why you're running into issues completing your purchase. You will want to choose one of these supported methods of payment to select your plan. So sorry for the confusion!
