Transferring subscription based customers from WooCommerce

Hi,

I have an existing subscription based business (customers sign up and are charged every 3, 4 or 6 months) with WooCommerce. The charges are either through Stripe or PayPal.

I'd like to transfer this across to Shopify but I don't know how it's going to affect the existing customers (obviously I don't want them to experience any change, and their subscriptions should continue on as before). Does anyone have any experience in doing this?

Thanks

Hi @pantso,

Nick here from Shopify.

Can I ask if you are currently using an app on WooCommerce for your subscription? The reason I ask is that some apps are applicable for multiple e-commerce software systems and it might be possible to do it within the app.

If it cannot be done within the app or you aren't using an app, the best way you would go about doing this would be to export your customer list from WooCommerce and then import them into your Shopify store. There is a helpful guide from Shopify going through the process to import customers to your store that you might find useful here

Hopefully, this helps and looking forward to hearing from you.

All the best, Nick

Hey Nick,

Thanks for the response. I'm using WooCommerce Subscriptions, so I'm not sure if this would transfer. I'm guessing not?

If I go ahead and export the list, and import it into Shopify, will that affect the existing subscribers? From my understanding it would because of their connection with Stripe and PayPal as the gateway. So then I'm worried I would lose all these customers that I have built up over a couple of years.

Do you know if this is true?

Hi @pantso,

Ah ok, if the subscriptions are with WooCommerce directly, I'm thinking it might not be possible to do a straight transfer over.

What you would essentially be doing if you exported the customers then importing them is creating a customer base in your Shopify admin, it wouldn't necessarily connect or link directly to a subscription service. You can see more about the customer section of the admin here

I did find an app which could be worth your while looking into also. It's from Bold apps and it's their Bold Subscriptions app. I found a page on their help guide which could be of some use to you. It's a Bold Subscriptions import template which you can read here. Talking to the Bold team about this directly could shed some further light on this and could be a possible solution.

Hi Nick,

Thanks for that info. I'll investigate directly with the subscription app providers to try and work it out.

Appreciate the help.

Cheers

Nick

Sounds good. Fingers crossed you can make it work. Can you let me know in a reply here what you find out, please? I would be curious to know.
