Hello,

Not sure if this has been answered, but I have a website in Hybris and will be migrating to Shopify. The URL redirect issue is this: A category URL is such:

https://www.solsticesunglasses.com/collections/women%27s-sunglasses/women-givenchy  and a product URL is such:

https://www.solsticesunglasses.com/product/givenchy-7118g-shield-sunglasses/716736125602.

How and what would be the URL structure be redirected to?

Thank you for your help.

This is an accepted solution.

Hey there @logan1429!

Shopify's URL structure for collections (aka categories) and products is quite simple. By default, collection pages will use a handlized version of the collection name (IE solsticesunglasses.com/collections/givenchy-womens-sunglasses), but you do have the option to edit each collection URL using the SEO settings. The same concept is true for product pages; a handlized version of the product name is used (IE solsticesunglasses.com/products/givenchy-7118g-sunglasses), and you do have the option to edit each product URL. Note that you cannot stop the use of /collections/ or /products/ - you can only change the tail end of the URL.

Shopify has built-in support for URL redirects. You can find this in the Shopify admin under Online Store > Navigation. On the Navigation settings page you should see a link for URL Redirects, like so:

On the URL redirects page you can manually add each redirect (supplying both the old URL as the 'from' and the new URL as the 'to') or you can upload a list of redirects in bulk using the import tool.

@logan1429 Hello again!

All product page URLs must contain /products/ and all collection (aka category) page URLs must contain /collections/. Unfortunately your proposed URL changes for the category pages will not work

Hello and thank you for responding.

So would these be better:

Potential new category page:

https://www.solsticesunglasses.com/collections/bottega-veneta-sunglasses

Potential women’s sunglass page

https://www.solsticesunglasses.com/collections/womens-alexander-mcqueen-designer-sunglasses

Can be done for men as well.

Potential product page

https://www.solsticesunglasses.com/products/bottega-veneta-bv0013s-007-round-sunglasses/889652056630

Hi Logan,

This URL redirect problem will be addressed with a migration partner. You can perform migration while having your store still in the running without a problem. You can try their free demo to see the actual process and results, or live chat with the support team for more information! hope it helps.

All of these questions and answers are confusing because they are not put into context. So perhaps I can make this a bit more clear for the average person migrating their store to Shopify.

  1. When migrating to Shopify you must migrate all product detail pages, category landing pages, content pages, blog pages, and your home page.
  2. The migration should be a 1:1 page for page match of all content, metadata, and a 301-Redirect of your Canonical URL to the new Shopify handle (URL).

Once your in the 301-Redirect (URL-Redirect) part of your migration you will see that Shopify allows you to control the entire URL except for the first directory path. That means you have your ROOT Domain e.g. www.yourdomain.com and then everything after that is considered the directory path. You cannot control the first directory for each page type. e.g. /collections, /products, /blogs.

Each page on your existing website has what is called a "Canonical URL". This is the URL that holds the juice for your Google Rank and is the final destination for that content regardless of how many other paths send traffic to that page. This URL will be added to the URL Redirects area as the "Redirect from" in Shopify and the Shopify "Handle" will be added to the "Redirect to" spot.

Another source to find the "Redirect from" URL from your existing website is to look at what URL Google is sending you to when you look up a page of yours there. That is the URL Google has indexed and what is ultimately what is most important in this process.

So to answer your original question:

https://www.solsticesunglasses.com/product/givenchy-7118g-shield-sunglasses/716736125602.

This URL would go into the URL Redirects area in Shopify in the "Redirects from" spot without the ROOT domain.

Meaning it would go into the Redirects from as /product/givenchy-7118g-shield-sunglasses/716736125602

Then in the "Redirects to" spot you are adding whatever Shopify "Handle" you have assigned to your product inside Shopify. That is completely customizable and would be entered as /product/handle
