URLs NOT SEO friendly

Why are the URLs soooo long! I just moved over from Volusion where, for example, the URL for one of my products was:

http://www.cleure.com/remove-fine-lines-under-eyes.htm

With Shopify it's:

http://www.cleure.com/collections/anti-aging-products-for-sensitive-skin/products/remove-fine-lines-...

This is rediculous! You need to go back to the drawing board and shorten these, so the URL gets to the point of where it's going!!

Hi Flora,

Thanks for the feedback.  I have consulted many SEO experts (Rand from SEOMoz, Tom from Distilled) and they have all had a look at the Shopify platform.  I too have about 15 years of experience with SEO, from running an Internet Marketing team at eBay.  There are thousands of sites on Shopify that rank at the top of Google for millions of keywords.

With that, please let me assure you that our URLs are SEO friendly.  If you look at the source code for the example you gave you'll see that we supply a canonical URL to the product page:

<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.cleure.com/products/remove-fine-lines-under-eyes"; />

There is really no issue with putting a product under the /products/ category vs putting them all on the root directory.  You will get the absolute same rankings either way.  Instead I would focus on many other SEO factors, such as content on the page and how that page gets linked.

Thanks Craig for the reply.  But why is it when I go to that page, the URL looks like this:

http://www.cleure.com/collections/anti-aging-products-for-sensitive-skin/products/remove-fine-lines-...

instead of the canonical version you show in your reply?  Is there a setting I need to make?  I don't understand that part.  Or are you saying it only shows up the way yours looks when it's opened through a link?  Can you explain the difference?

Hi Flora,

If you look at the source code for that page you'll see there's a canonical URL listed for the more SEO friendly.  There's nothing you need to do :)

Flora,

Just to expand on what Craig has said, right now your theme is set to create product URLs with the collection included.

In the collection.liquid file, you'll see something like this:

<a href="{{ product.url | within: collection }}">

Changing it to just the following will use the simpler URL.

<a href="{{ product.url }}">

From Google's perspective, it'll always respect the shorter Canonical URL.

I work for Shopify.

Hi Jonathan, The shortened link for products looks so much nicer.

Can you help me with the blog posts which I have at the footer of the pages called Health Topics, and tell me how to shorten them?

This is how they come up:

http://www.cleure.com/blogs/health-topics/7770241-toothpaste-ingredients-to-avoid

http://www.cleure.com/blogs/health-topics/7797759-childrens-personal-care-product

When I was on Volusion, this same one appeard like this:

http://www.cleure.com/Toothpaste-Ingredients-to-Avoid-s/251.htm

WHAT'S WITH ALL THE #S on the shopify url? I hope there is a code we can use to shorten these???

I have the same issue(s).

Just transferred my long-standing website over to Shopify and all of the URL's are not what I wanted them to be or had intended.

Example:

https://oakparkhome-hardware.com/collections/arroyo-craftsman

Looking at the source code there is no difference:

 <link rel="canonical" href="https://oakparkhome-hardware.com/collections/arroyo-craftsman">

Wanted it to be:  https://oakparkhome-hardware.com/arroyo-craftsman

It used to be: https://oakparkhome-hardware.com/lighting/arroyo-craftsman

I moved to Shopify hoping it would be more SEO friendly. But its like my website has fallen off of the face of the Internet Earth. Used to be on page 1 for many URLs.
