Variants appear as 'unavailable'

I have several products in my store which have variants. Most are working fine, showing the variants as either 'Sold Out' or available, with an 'Add to Cart' message. We don't use Shopify to manage our inventory, and maintain products as 'don't track inventory' unless we want to mark them out of stock, in which case we set the product to 'Shopify tracks inventory' and we set the inventory to 0.

On a couple of products, the variants appear as 'Unavilable', when they are in stock and they are marked as 'don't track inventory'. The variants on which this happens are set up exactly the same as the variants which get an 'Add to Cart' button. Also the same as products where variants are functioning properly. ‘Sales channels’ in the back end is set to Online Store for the product to show the products as active in the store.

Can anyone provide any ideas as to what's happening? Thanks!

Hey Alison,

Could you take some pictures on the backend of your site for a product with this issue? If you could show a few screen shots of variants that are and are not showing as Unavailable, that might be helpful.

Hopefully with that extra info we can provide some thoughts!

Hi Bob

Thanks for coming back to me. I'm posting a screen grab of a product with 4 variants. The first one (3.5 blade) works OK. The second on (5.5" blade) shows as unavailable).

Oddly, in the front end, although the 3.5" variant first loads as 'Add to Cart', if you click into an 'Unavailable' variant, and then back in to the 3.5" variant, this too now reads 'Unavailable'. If you refresh the page, it reverts to 'Add to Cart'.

Grateful for any light you can shed! Thanks,

Alison

Thanks for posting those Alison. I'm not seeing anything either in those screen shots that would cause this issue. I noticed it is happening to https://www.burgonandball.com/products/double-bow-supershears, but not on https://www.burgonandball.com/products/love-the-glove-artisan

I looked at the html on the product pages and they are using the same product template and I'm not seeing anything jump out that would cause this issue.

Have you tried viewing this product (https://www.burgonandball.com/products/double-bow-shears) IN Shopify and setting Inventory Policy to Shopify Tracks this Products Inventory > Save > change back to Don't Track Inventory?

If that doesn't work, perhaps reach out to Shopify or the software you are using to manage inventory.

Good luck!

Hi Bob

Thanks so much for taking a look. Yes, oddly it seems only to affect our Agricultural products - our Garden products (like the gloves) seem to work fine, although they're created on exactly the same template.

I have indeed tried setting the Inventory Policy to Shopify Tracks this Products Inventory and setting the quantity to 1 (ie In stock) and then changing it back to Don't Track, but in doesn't change how the variants display.

I will get in touch with Shopify, and see if they can shed any light!

Thanks again for looking.

Best wishes,

Alison

Hi, no we've not been able to get it fixed. We're using a custom theme, so unfortunately it's not something we can go to Shopift with.

Interesting to know that other shops are experiencing it too.
