Hi @DripForMen ,

Dani here from Shopify!

SEO is something that many merchants struggle with, but we don't have to make it super complicated. Have you already had a chance to review our free SEO Academy course? It's a great jumping off point and will go into much further detail of what I will cover here.

Have you already added alt text to your images? Adding alt text not only makes your website accessible to those that are visually impaired, but also allows search engines to crawl your site easier and more accurately.

We have a business SEO checklist to ensure you are setting yourself up for success. For example, you'll want to keep your page titles short and written in a way that is simple to read. Have you already added a meta description to your Online Store > Preferences section of your website?

If you'd like to share a link to your store, I'd be happy to take a look at what we can improve specifically on your store. Let me know if you have any further questions!

All the best,

Dani

If you're looking to improve product descriptions for SEO, you're looking for a couple things:

  1. What do your customers want to know about in the description that they're also searching for on Google
  2. Is there a process that you can setup that consistently lets you refine that over time.

Both of these are addressed by engaging your current customers.

The most efficient way of managing this is through adding a product question and answer app to your store....and this is how that helps:

Your Customers Ask Questions that Other Customers Also Asking (or going somewhere else to find)

By engaging your existing visitors you let them help identify where the content gaps are within your description.    You answer, they convert...and you create original content in the process valuable for SEO.   The beauty of this, is that it actually is a conversion optimization tool as well.  The Shopify App Answerbase has case studies on their site where they have some customers where up to 75% of the product questions answered convert to a new sale....so that is a nice short-term incentive to create that content.   There was a study done a few years ago by NNGroup that attributed round 20% of failed customer acquisitions to lack of product information or unclear information...so product Q&A helps solve that.

So, what that does is allows you to solve it once and for all....and know that content gap is there so you can add it to your description.   You know other customers ask similar questions...and they even do that through Google...so its an SEO no brainer.

It Also Builds NEW Traffic

I mentioned above that customers are asking similar questions through Google...well, product Q&A satisfies that need in a couple different ways.

First, the most popular Q&A threads that are displayed on your product pages do get recognized as being within your page and you'll start to see your product page pulling up for new key phrases and terms.   Even apps that have a JavaScript snippet that allows it to function, Google can read how that JavaScript renders content and index that content as well.

Second.....if you have the right app, it'll help you spawn new landing pages from that Q&A content and that can be gold for you.   For example, you'll start to see your product Q&A content pull up in results like this;

google-result.png

So, not only can it enhance your product descriptions for SEO but also builds its own traffic with new pages.   Answerbase also provides some stats around that as well....showing that the visitors to Q&A content have an average lifetime value of up to 2x more than your normal Google search visitors.   That speaks to the quality of the content and its ability to draw relevant new traffic.

Further Revising Product Descriptions

The above activity helps feed better informed decisions about your product description as well.   You can track the activity of your product Q&A content...and then use those engagement/insights in order to better revise your descriptions...and those descriptions are revised with confidence that it's information that end-customers are actually searching for.

Hope this helps, but a great process that can help both product descriptions and SEO.
