[EDIT] Just been informed that Shopify Timber is no longer supported. Slate is apparently what we should be working with. [/EDIT]

Hi everyone,

I am in need of a developer familiar with the Shopify Timber framework to build a custom website. We have already instructed a local brand & design agency to rebrand our business, and they will be completing a wireframe/design for the site and will be providing style guidelines and assets. The first presentation from them is this Thursday. We just need someone to take the design and develop it into a theme (possibly with a few tweaks for UX). We are looking for people with the following experience:

  • Shopify Timber Framework - Very important as in-house staff currently use this to make tweaks as and when required, as well as when creating new pages/blog posts.
  • Mobile First Design
  • UX design - Branding agency may not have taken UX into consideration so there may be some input required.
  • SEO - Our business is 80% reliant on organic traffic. Any mistakes here could cost us dearly. In-house staff can check for errors. We would love to have someone that can develop a super fast website.
  • Functional changes - We don't want to be paying through the nose for a product upsell app. We just want some basic functionality to ask if the customer wants to buy batteries with a product (mainly to help the customer experience, not a massive revenue earner). We also want a blog search, again to help the user experience.

We would expect anyone that wants to tender for the work to provide examples of experience and references. The timeline is somewhat relaxed. We want the work to be complete by the end of October, ready for testing during November and December. We are on a relatively tight budget (between £1500-£2500). We would prefer to work with a UK based developer, but open to working with anyone outside the UK as well.

Hey Sean,

The Timber theme is no longer being maintained by Shopify. Slate is the new tool for developing themes. https://shopify.github.io/slate/

Hi Sean,

Glad to see you're doing a redesign. You can still use Timber for your store, regardless of it being deprecated. It's just deprecated from development point of view, the theme is still SEO optimized. Then again, Slate is also SEO optimized, so if you're starting from scratch, you should go with Slate. I also built my own Shopify theme development scaffold that I use on my projects: https://github.com/vfonic/shopify-scaffold. This project comes with preinstalled tools that help building mobile-first themes and also provides tools for adding support for older browsers.

The project that you have, a redesign, is exactly what I do. Here's an example of one of the shops I set up recently: https://www.prodigidellaterra.it

  • Shopify Timber Framework - Very important as in-house staff currently use this to make tweaks as and when required, as well as when creating new pages/blog posts.
    - I've built custom "composer" tool that you can use to compose beautiful pages on your own. You can check these out here: https://www.topglas.de/pages/gleitsichtglaeser, https://www.topglas.de/pages/sonnenbrillen-mit-sehstarkehttps://www.topglas.de/pages/selbsttonende-brillenglaserhttps://www.topglas.de/pages/arbeitsplatzglaser
These all were created by the client. I only provided the tool.
  • Mobile First Design
    - Of course. Today more than 50% (!) users come from mobile
  • UX design - Branding agency may not have taken UX into consideration so there may be some input required.
    - I think the main purpose of UX is to be useful. You can have stuff flying around, but if it's not useful, then it can be annoying and doesn't add any value. Here's a very customized Konfiugrator tool that I developed for the client: https://www.topglas.de/pages/brillenglaeser-online-auswaehlen. I believe it has a good UX. For example, try selecting something and then refresh your browser page, or play with the sliders on step 5. Or check it out on mobile!
  • SEO - Our business is 80% reliant on organic traffic. Any mistakes here could cost us dearly. In-house staff can check for errors. We would love to have someone that can develop a super fast website.
    - This is a must. It comes with both TImber and Slate. I can do SEO audit for you and as well provide you with the SEO tools that you can use to make sure your shop's pages are SEO optimized.
    - One more aspect would be social sharing so that your customers can share and get those nice previews on facebook posts.
  • Functional changes - We don't want to be paying through the nose for a product upsell app. We just want some basic functionality to ask if the customer wants to buy batteries with a product (mainly to help the customer experience, not a massive revenue earner). We also want a blog search, again to help the user experience.
    - Blog search is already built in Shopify. I can make that change to your current theme in 5min, before moving on to building new theme.
    - Regarding product upsell app, we can have a look what's in the App store. If those are too expensive, I'll find a way to make it happen without the app. Or I can build cheaper app for you (that I can then also put in the App store, as I already do develop apps as well. Here's an app I developed recently: https://apps.shopify.com/product-slider) Basically there's nothing that can't be done.

I don't think you should wait until November / December. I can make the new theme for you in a month. Why not have it earlier? :)

Send me an email and we can talk about the budget and all the other details. I can also provide you with more references if you want.

Have a great day,
