Multiple products with this barcode

As I am adding products to my online store, I am running across a problem with my barcodes. For each product I include variants for size and include the UPCs for each size. The barcodes we use at our brick and mortar locations reflect those sizes. For example if a top comes in small, medium, and large, the barcodes for each item are
485-S
485-M
485-L
My issue is when using the inventory scanner in the Shopify app. When I scan the barcode 485-S, it gives me an error message that says "multiple items have this barcode". What can I do to fix this?

I am having this same problem too. Curious to know how people go about this. 

Otherwise, Inventory management is going to be very manual for now.
