I got a simple question but I can't find a clear answer on the web.
I run a business in France,
I do sel in my showroom and I would like to be able to use Shopify POS,
at customer checkout I would like to be able to use/connect to an external card reader,
can someone who got more knowledge than me, could explain what are my options?
I can't find compatible hardware.
Rose here from Shopify. Thanks for reaching out!
Currently, we do not have a card reader that is supported in France. Here is your option for selling in person in France:
Use a third party terminal
You can find a third party terminal and card reader to collect the funds from your customers. In this case, you can create the order through the POS application and charge the customer with your external card reader. These actions will be separate and not automatically linked to your Shopify order.
When the payment is completed on the terminal, you can manually mark the order as paid in your POS order so that the inventory and financial reporting is up to date.
I hope that helps! If you have any other questions, please let me know.
Hi there @Rose
Thanks for your answer, it's much clear now!
I'll go with the manual option,
however, I've just tried and did not figure out how to make it work.
Can you guide me? Do i need a subscription to
Then how do I activate the manual credit card payment? For now I don't see the option on the POS app.
Thanks for getting back to us.
While gathering more context on the manual payment option for you, it has come to my attention that this option is only available for merchants in Canada and the USA. I have confirmed this with our POS team as well. I do apologize for the confusion - I will be redacting my original post to simply include the option of using an external terminal for your payment processing.
To use an external card terminal, you need to set up an account with a payment processor, and then buy or rent a terminal from them. Since the payment is processed by a third party provider, you will need to mark the order as paid in the Shopify admin. Here's a help doc on adding a custom payment to your POS Shopify order to mark it as paid.
I hope this helps!
@Rose Thank you for specifying.
Oh that's a bad news :( it means manual order marking as paid + Manual accounting to associated payments with order.....
Do you have any idea / timeframe on when this is going to evolve in France/Europe?
Yes that is correct.
Regarding a timeframe, there currently isn't a set plan to release POS card readers in France at the moment. However, I will be passing along the request and want for this feature to be added for our merchants in France. Our team is always looking for feedback to improve our platform for our merchants. I will be sure to let them know.
If you have any other questions, please let me know!
We have the same issue and would HATE to type in the info twice. Can you either make sure there's an external card reader that works with Shopify (we use and love SumUp) or release your own hardware (even better)? Our specific issue is that we would like our vendors to be able to take an order in store on the Shopify app and trigger payment so that they can pay with credit or debit card. Thanks
