returning item for store credit

Sometimes customers will return items for store credit (not a refund). right now we are giving the customer a credit note/voucher which is ok, however there doesn't seem to be a way to return the item to store inventory. For instance lets say customer buys a dress for €100 in cash, and then wants to return it a week later for store credit. We can find the original transaction and would like to restock the item, but the only way to do this is by clicking refund - which only allows a refund to the original payment method - in this case cash, but we want to refund to 'store credit' So now the only way we can restore the item to inventory is to manually update it in the shopify back office.

You can refund orders to store credit. This will return the item back to inventory: http://docs.shopify.com/pos/operating-pos/orders/exchange-item

Is it possible for POS system to print out a receipt with the store credit amount/balance and details for the customer? or do we have to keep our own records for the store credit aside from the POS?

@Terry: Currently the same process, you need to cancel the order then create a new one.

@jatin: Currently not, this will be possible in the future though.

Hi Kristian,

Thanks for the question.

We released an updated to the app yesterday that supports Gift Cards. If you are looking for a higher level of tracking I recommend issuing Gift Cards as store credit. Gift Cards are tracked server side and the receipt will provide an initial balance and subsequent balances after the gift card is used.

Can i ask why a direct store credit option isnt available? We are in the process of switching over and it seems Shopify is missing some applications that seem crucial to running a store that other stores have. We often allocate store credit to specific customers and its good to be able to run reports to see how many people are sitting with credit against their account. Also things like affiliates & Rewards points systems these are all over priced , systems like open cart ofter this within themes surely shopify can also?

Thanks for the questions. We recommend using Gift Cards to distribute credit to customers. You can export this data and accomplish exactly what you stated. I hope this helps.
