Love that this is top of mind. We had JuE Wong, past CEO of Moroccan Oil on our Podcast The Impact Exchange where we discussed packaging solutions and how to message this decision out to customers - "How to Integrate CSR into Your Product DNA."

Here is an amazing stat -

I also love and use Ecoenclose! I use their kraft mailers and shipping labels in my packaging.

We just recently started selling our shreds from old books as packaging material to the book and publishing industry. This just furthers our social enterprise component and we are so glad that we are finding a use for old books that have been donated. Some of the book donations have no more useful life as books and we were told that they are often a problem for recycling.

Many books are ending up in the landfills because the binding and covers create a problem for recycling. It is labor intensive to remove these parts of the book and therefore they get tossed into landfills. The books also do not decompose quickly when they are stacked in the landfill and pages do not receive oxygen.

We have found a few ways to upcycle these old books which include using them for packaging. The shredding process is usually done by those with disabilities so it is a win - win.

Hey all,

This is a really great, comprehensive blog post. Definitely going to share with the Spirit of 608 community. One to add is noissue.com, which offers a number of options for more eco-conscious mailers, stickers, tape, tissue paper, etc. And there's also EcoEnclose, which I hear many companies have had a good experience with.

Since this article came out we've also started using https://www.betterpackaging.com/ mailers and it's been great thus far!

Has anyone experimented with re-usable mailers? Ultimately I want to champion re-usability rather than compostability/recyclability, after all a mailer is just a generic vessel for the product inside, ideally it would be re-used. We're looking at trying out https://www.thelimeloop.com/ once we have a bit more scale.
