Deleted Variants are not available for notifications/receipts or the review page

Hey there,

We were wondering how you properly handle variants that are out of stock (like a color) which isn't coming back?

Previously we simple deleted those variants because we don't offer a certain color anymore.
But we saw, that if you do so, the deleted variant is not available any more on following position:

* the page where the customer can review the order

* notification emails

* receipts (which is another thing we have to figure out)

 

So the question is: How do you properly handle variants that ain't coming back in stock?

 

We want them to NOT be visible on the product page, but be available for the before mentioned things.

I found this link which details to add a punch of code in order to hide variants.
But there must be an easier way mustn't it?
I mean this is something everyone using variants going out of stock and not coming back must be dealing with?

Or are we getting something totally wrong here?
