My name is Ren and I am from the Shopify support team, happy to help you out with this. All it takes is purchasing your new domain, connecting it and setting it as the primary domain. I recommend keeping your old one until it expires as a subdomain as it will re-direct customers who aren't aware of your domain name changes. Learn more about domains in general here.
You have a couple of options when it comes to connecting a new domain, purchasing one is easy through Shopify - you can buy a new domain from Shopify directly by following these steps. Or, if you already own a third-party domain, follow these directions to get connected.
If you are planning to buy a new domain through Shopify, check out the steps below:
From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Domains.
Click Buy new domain in the header.
In the dialog box, enter the domain name you want to buy.
Each extension's price will be listed. Click Buy next to the extension that you want to buy.
Check Auto-renew this domain every year if you want your domain to be automatically renewed for you before it expires.
After you have read the ICANN policy and Domain Registration Agreement, click Buy domain.
You will receive an email from Shopify confirming your purchase. It might take up to 48 hours to for your new domain to start working.
After you've purchased your domain, you can select your primary domain (the domain name that customers will see in the address bar while they browse your online store).
Hope that helps! Let me know if I can help clarify any of those steps for you. Have you changed only your name or your business entirely? What prompted the change? Usually, people make these changes to better align with their branding.
Here's an interesting read that discusses the guidelines of branding and why they're so important!
