Major issue with files automatically converted to WEBP

Hi,

Apparently you have made a decision to automatically convert all images to WEBP format. Even for Shopify Plus customers, I guess we have no option to disable it? That is a huge limitation compared to other e-commerce solutions, that we can not control image format ourselves.

Besides loosing control, our issue now is that our e-com managers often download images from one instance and uploads into another. But since you do not support WEBP format when uploading (?!), we can no longer share images between instances.

Please, tell mere there is a way to disable this feature?

Best,
Lasse

Hi Lasse,

In the interim, please see if your team can use a browser that does not support webp (such as Safari with version less than v14) while downloading images. Shopify will serve jpeg image if the browser does not support webp.

See a list of browser versions supporting webp at https://caniuse.com/webp

Hope this helps in the interim while we get a upload support for webp.

Regards,

Akshay

Does that mean that you acknowledge the bug?

Vi have Macs and PCs and they are all updated to most recent operating systems and browsers. Asking to use an old browser version is a strange request 🙂

Hi Lasse,

This is the workaround we used in our Shopify implementation, when we came across the need to download webp images as jpeg. It may not work for you based on what you have noted. Yout could try searching for "saving webp images as jpeg" on the web and see if any suggestions work for you in the interim.

Per this link, even though you upload jpeg images, Shopify will serve them as webp if the browser supports it.

I hope someone from Shopify can clarify this further.

Akshay

Hi Akshay,

Sorry, I though the reply was from Shopify 🙂

Let's see what they have to say about the issue.

Thank you for the workaround tips.

Best,
Lasse

Anyone have a solution to this yet? It seems odd to have to downgrade browsers to just get an image.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Hello, not the ideal solution but since no one has offered one yet, here is the workaround I found. There are a couple of Chrome extensions that give you the option to save a WebP file as a JPG or PNG. I looked at 3 different ones and tested 2 and I like this one: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/webp-avif-image-converter/pbcfbdlbkdfobidmdoondbgdfpjolhci...

It gives the most options in terms of what file type you want to save, where it's saved, and file naming. So you can use that to save images off of Shopify sites as JPG/PNG.

But this one also worked (the only instance I can imagine this one having an advantage is if you're not downloading in a consistent format, i.e. regularly alternating between downloading as JPG and PNG. But if you consistently want to download in the same file type, this one adds an extra step to select file type each time).

It's also worth noting that if you are downloading the images from your own Shopify site, which is what is sounds like in the original post here, you can download the original file within Shopify instead of downloading the version from the CDN on your live storefront (i.e. go into the product listing, click on the image, and then click download. Or if it's on a different type of page, go to your files in Shopify menu and then find the image (you can search by name) and download from there (click on the image thumbnail and then you'll see the download icon on the pop up window)).
