Question on Product ID and Variant ID in Product API

Hi everyone I just joined this platform and I am working with the APIs provided under the Admin API.
For background, I am developing the back end for our shop to automatize updating products, however I need to know if the Variant IDs are unique to a given Product ID? 
I could not find this in the documentation it just talks about the limits of variants etc. A lot of the examples seem to point that they are which is why Shopify needs to generate them for you, but I wanted to be sure. 

Essentially I can't have the same variant ID in two separate products.

All variant id's should be unique. Those are what is used to add a product to the cart, if they weren't unique you'd have a conflict with that process.
