How can I add a 'Request Sample' button to my product page without creating a variant?

I am wanting to have a 'Buy' button and a 'Request sample' button on the product page without having to create a variant for the sample.  The 'Buy' button would function as per Shopify norms.  the 'Request Sample' button would mimic the Buy button's add to cart, but append a '/SA' suffix to the SKU, append ' - Memo Sample' suffix to the Product Title and replace the price with 0.00 .

I have seen similar posts, but nothing that has a solution that does not involve using the variant, so it is not a unique requirement.

Is this a viable process within the realms of Shopify and can anyone help with this?

Sadly, no. We ended up adding a hidden variant to each product to support this.

How did you use the variants option for customers to request sample? I am trying to set up something similar but it looks just messed up.
