Is there any way to fix the way Simple Theme decides related products? It's totally random and makes no sense at all. At the least it should pick from the same collection. Someone looking at a product for first holy communion for boys is not interested in girls cheerleading merchandise. Or on a Christmas product why does it show summer items. It's totally out of sync and I would really love to know if there's some way to adjust this in the liquid files or whatever.
It does say that it will follow purchase patterns of what's bought together etc but 1. it doesn't 2. If the item is brand new there is no data for this and in that case it's supposed to pull from the collection and it's not doing that either.
>>>In cases where purchase or product description data aren't available for a given product, products from a related collection are shown. The algorithm uses the collection in the URL from which the request to the API endpoint originated, and pulls other products from that collection. If the product doesn't have a collection URL, then the recommendation algorithm finds collections that include the product and pulls other products from those instead (excluding collections with handles “all” and “frontpage”).<<<

Hyde here from Shopify. Great question!
It sounds like you're familiar with how the product recommendations algorithm works. You're likely also familiar with the limitations:
And on the same page you may have read our recommendations:
Anything beyond that may take time and patience. Alternatively, you could consider hiring the help of a Shopify Expert. Experts are a team of third-party developers who can make custom changes to your store on a contracted basis. They may be able to develop a custom solution for your product recommendations or may have access to an already existing integration that I'm unaware of. As with all Expert contracts, requirements and prices are agreed upon before any work commences, so you can always check in with a few different Experts to ensure you're getting what you want for a competitive price.
I hope that helps!
All the best, Hyde.
@Hyde Well, since the site is up almost about a year now, I would think the "algorithm" would've figured it out by now. And with a brand new product it should pull from the same collection!!! But it doesn't. :0( So.... it has nothing to do with patience. And honestly to hire someone to tweak things is fine. To fix them? I don't think that's fair. And you know what happens when there's too many modifications. I've already had to re-do one of my whole sites once because of upgrades to the theme and then all the mods had to be re-done. And you don't hire someone to do mods until you have fully figured out what you need 100% as one thing effects another. I've learned throughout the years that you need to know exactly what you want. Be careful how you state it and understand what the domino effect is from what you're asking for.
I'm not ready for custom mods yet that I do not control. But thank you for responding.
This is an accepted solution.
I completely understand where you're coming from. I think it might be worth reaching out to our help center to get more targeted support. While we’re not able to provide account-specific support via the Shopify Community at this time, we’d be happy to continue assisting you through live chat, email, or callback.
Since this is the next step I’ve marked this reply as the solution for the benefit of others who may discover this topic. Thanks! -Hyde
This is NOT an accepted solution. This is not an account specific problem it's a theme problem. or a related product algorithm or coding problem. Related items should First Look at Collections and maybe we should be able to choose which the main collection is It's appreciated that collections are created automatically from the tags but it would be great if we could choose the importance of collections (move them up / down the list just like our navigation menus) OK I do realize that's asking for too much restructure but I can dream can't I? Something sold for baseball fans can also be on a household collection and a general sports collection but when it comes to a related product I'd rather all baseball items (not throw pillows or cheerleading bows)
