Varient Selection: Choosing a color option does not change the varient option in the dropdown

I have setup my varients. When I select a color option from the dropdown, the corresponding image is shown and the image option is highlighted. This is correct. However, when I select the image option, the selection changes, BUT the varient dropdown does not change.

for example, if I select pink in the dropdown, pink will be displayed. If I then select the green image, the dropdown will stay as pink.
