When to switch source from wholesalers to manufacturers?

Hi,

I have a pet supply store and currently get my products from two wholesalers, some items are much more expensive for me to sell in my store than well-established corporations. I'm not sure about the next step of buying my products from the brands instead of wholesalers.

If you have experience with this, I'd appreciate the advice.

My guess is that companies only sell their products in huge inventories (hundreds of each product), so I need a much bigger warehouse and a lot of money invested, is this correct? Are there other requirements to be able to buy directly from brands?

I know each company is different, but the basics are the same.

Also, I need to mention that I have physical products and don't dropship.

Thank you for taking the time to read this topic and I appreciate your input
