In general, your tax settings and your payouts are handled separately, so there should not be an issue with you receiving payouts for online orders regardless of whether or not you have provided a valid VAT number. However, if you can please tell me what country you are based in and whether or not you are using Shopify Payments to accept credit card payments, I'll be able to offer more specific guidance.

If you're based in the European Union, you can read more about registration-based taxes and how to set them up on the Shopify Help Center. Regardless of where you are based, it is your responsibility to determine whether or not you are required to register for VAT or sales tax in your region.
