Can Shopify customers indicate they are tax exempt for Virginia taxes?

Hi Shopify,

Most of our sales in all states, including Virginia are books going to schools, churches, and libraries, which i believe are tax exempt. Only sales to individuals are taxable in Virginia. Does Shopify have a way to have customers check a box saying they are tax exempt, and maybe they have a "tax exempt" number?

Thanks for your question. In this case, it would be best for you to set up tax-exempt customers. You can find the steps on how to do so in this help document. Tax exempt customers are not charged any tax when they complete a checkout. These customers need to check out using the same email address as the one listed on their customer account. You can reach out to your customers that you believe are tax exempt and let them know you can create a tax-exempt customer account for them, or you can add an announcement bar on your theme to let your customers know that this is possible.
