Financing, tax rates, and accounting
As Brexit is nearly here, we face the prospect of losing most of our EU customers because our prices are about to become uncompetitive because they'll be liable for import VAT on their orders from us (UK based company).
Is it possible to add a significant and clear checkbox into the checkout process if they select a non-UK destination to make it clear and confirm that the customer is (unfortunately) liable for any import duty charged on their order by customs of their country?
As we don't know what that charge would be we can't factor it in and wouldn't want to anyway but I don't want to be in the situation where someone refuses a package because they weren't clear of this extra cost because we'll lose out on shipping and customer goodwill thanks to the stupid Brexit.
Hi @welcomebrand,
Hyde here from Shopify.
I completely understand your frustration. Brexit may prove a challenge for plenty of businesses, so it's great that you have an online presence and are tackling it now!
While a tick box wouldn't be available natively, there are a few apps that can help by providing customers with terms and conditions they have to sign off on:
There's a great blog post here on the subject and I found this great one too.
I hope this all helps!
All the best, Hyde.

OK thanks, it looks like I'm going to have a to use a generic terms notification / checkbox as the shipping part is after the terms and conditions page which isn't ideal as I don't need to show a Brexit notification to my UK customers, just anyone who selects a non-UK address but it seems the checkbox part is before the address so I don't see any way to do it how I'd like 😞
