I'm starting a shopify store, and I thought I had a good handle on things. I've gotten the necessary permits and familiarized myself with GST remittance requirements. The Canadian PST/HST situation was causing me some stress, but I figured I'd just start off selling in the US. Last I read, as long as I didn't have a nexus in any state or sell over $X, I didn't have much to worry about.
Today I discovered that a number of US states are now requiring online retailers to charge and remit taxes. Not surprising, really, but I'm finding myself just completely overwhelmed by trying to figure out what my tax obligations are and how to fulfill them. i'd really like to talk to a professional, even if just for my own peace of mind.
I live in a smaller town in Canada. There are a limited number of accountants here, and I'm not confident that any of them would have much experience with ecommerce, shopify stores, US sales or dropshipping. I'm especially concerned that they may not be up-to-date on the recent changes we're seeing in the US regarding taxation.
Can anyone recommend a good Canadian accountant who could advise me over email or video chat?
I am in the same boat. I have done a lot of research on the tax issue but it is still clear as mud. I contacted a local accountant and they wanted to charge me for the time it will take them to figure this out......
Is there a Canadian store owner who would be willing to share some screen shots of how they set up taxes? I am located in Ontario and am planning to ship only to Canada and USA. We are using Oberlo for dropshipping.
Any help would be appreciated. This is holding up our launch. Very frustrating.
I'm trying to set up a business in Canada as well. I would just like to focus on the customers in Canada and the States. I find this all a little bit overwhelming as well. I haven't registered my business for taxes yet because I'm not sure whether or not I'll make over 30,000 So do I set up taxes for Canadian customers, and how does that charge to them if my store currency is set to US. Then there is the whole state Nexus thing. All very confusing and I've yet to find any specific answers.
