Financing, tax rates, and accounting
Assume you have an online store that offers the same product — in one use case fulfilled as a medical item (if your shopper provides a medical prescription), and in another use case shipped as a regular commercial item with no prescription required.
Ideally you want to manage only one inventory of this item (the same item gets shipped with or without RX) and with that refer to it as a single item with one SKU. However taxation would differ in either scenario as medical items are non taxable.
Are there smart approaches to solve for this in Shopify? Leveraging a solution like Avalara seems to imply you will need to manage the item twice — an RX and non-RX version to assign a unique tax code to it — which disrupts the desire of joint inventory management.
Open and grateful for any thoughts and pointers!
