Digital VAT Tax and the UK

When going to the Tax settings, I have chosen the following option:

Charge VAT on digital goods- Charge VAT on digital goods Products in the Digital Goods VAT Tax will have VAT applied at checkout for European customers.

This seems to work for all EU countries except the UK now. I’m assuming this is because of the new Brexit. Is this a bug or how do I add UK manually? Will there be an update to Shopify to include UK?

Val here from Shopify!

As of January 2021, VAT for the UK is no longer automatically included in the EU VAT calculations. However, you can add manually this tax region in your Shopify Admin following these instructions, as you can see here:

06-16-3517-50527

Thanks for this. It took me 4-hours to figure this out, because nowhere in the instructions does it tell you that you have to add the country as a shipping destination first. I’m new to Shopify and you can’t just assume everyone knows this. Please update your documentation Shopify to explain this.

Thank you for your feedback on the documentation, I appreciate how frustrating this must've been. While this step is outlined in this article. I can see that the specific document doesn't have that information, so I really appreciate that you took the time to come back to us with this. I will pass this information along to the appropriate team.


For future reference, you can find the instructions on how to set up a new shipping region here, in case you weren't 100% sure before.
