How do I correctly set up Florida sales tax in Shopify?

Hi Guys!

So I'm having a hard time setting up my sales taxes. I know that Florida is destination-based sales tax, but does that mean I have to manually add in each state/county tax in Shopify OR do I just add in my sales tax certificate number and Shopify does the work? I just want to get this right so I don't accidentally withhold taxes from a state.

Hi @eclectic333eye

Welcome to the Shopify community forums! Your concern about taxes for the state of Florida is understandable. US tax rates are complicated at the best of times. Luckily, the admin will do most of the work for you.

All you need to do is apply to the states you have registered to collect tax in (Florida) and ensure you have your tax ID information setup for that registered state in your admin under Settings > Taxes. The checkout does the rest of the work calculating the tax rate once the customer enters their address.

This would be the standard setup for most merchants. If your business has unique tax needs, additional customization may be required. If you are ever unsure we always suggest connecting with a SMB tax professional to assist you with that.

Also note that shipping is not taxable in the state of Florida. You can toggle that off or on within your tax settings for each state.

Following up on this thread.  I had attached my FL sales tax certificate and the taxes report under finances does have tax jurisdiction, rate, and amount collected.  Which is great.  However, when you report sales tax collected to the Florida Dept of Revenue, they want more info.  Total sales, total exempt sales, total taxable sales in addition to the tax collected.   They also want taxable sales in all other counties with different tax rates than my own.

Is there a report that has this info in 1 place?  or a way to customize and add those fields to the tax report?

Thanks!

Hi @NewtoAllThis

Claudia here from Better Reports.

Have you been able to find a solution? If not, I would recommend our app Better Reports for this.

We have a built-in Tax collected per month report that breaks down the monthly sales tax by tax name (county). You can create a custom version filtered just for Florida sales showing taxes by county. This can be displayed in segments (ex. monthly) or aggregate over a filtered time period (last quarter).

In addition to this, Better Reports has more than 60 built-in reports available out of the box that covers many common use cases for merchants. You can schedule reports to run at set frequencies to your email or Google Drive or export the reports in CSV, Excel or PDF format.

I encourage you to install Better Reports and start your free 14-day trial and I'll be happy to set this up for you.

What do you think?
