How to handle VAT taxes for international sales from the US?

Can anyone advise me how to sell from the US to international customers and handle the VAT taxes?

I've used Etsy in the past who took care of all the taxes and customs and I'm at a loss whether I just tell customers that any VAT tax is their responsibility as I don't know how to add it, and then pay that particular country.

I've tried to read about the VAT tax but it seems so complicated to me.

 Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I don't really want to go back to Etsy.
