How to select “Charge sales tax” for all variants

I have 60 variants for some products and am going through them 1 by 1 to select this. Can’t find the option in the bulk editor. Can I just have this enabled by default for all my products?

Hey, @Kit4!

Thanks for sharing your question with our network. Also a special thank you to, @Ablestar_Daniel, for sharing their app solution.

There are two different ways you can update whether or not to charge taxes on a variant within Shopify. This can be done easily through the Bulk Editor, or through a CSV file.

          Bulk Editor

First head to Admin > Products > select the products you wish to edit > click Bulk Edit. This will open the Bulk Editor screen where you must click on Columns on the right-hand side to enable "charge taxes."

Here is a breakdown of these steps:

          CSV File

Some people find it easier to edit their products using a spreadsheet, as opposed to in the Admin. If this applies to you, go ahead and select products that need editing > click edit > export selected products.

Open the CSV file and find the column labelled "Variant Taxable" and change the values from false to true. Once done, hit save and import the file back into your Admin. As a recap, follow these steps:

I trust that is what you need, but let us know if you have further questions.

Thank you for that context.

I did some research online and it looks like they do offer a setting to make all your products taxable. Check out their help documentation here:

Hello,

You can update the 'charge tax' field for all those products at once for free using our Ablestar Bulk Product Editor app. After you've installed the app it'll show you a list of the products in your store. Then:

  1. Filter the list for the products you want to edit (or leave it as-is to update all products)
  2. Click on Edit Products in the top-right of the screen
  3. In the 'Field to Edit' area select Charge Tax on this product, and choose Yes
  4. Click on Run Edit at the top of the screen

Then the app will edit the fields for you. You can see the progress of the edit and always cancel or undo it if you need.

Our free plan of the apps includes 5 free edits every 30 days (with no limit on the number of the products) so it should work great for one-off updates like this.

Best,
Daniel

Is there any way to do it with the regular Shopify platform instead of a separate app?

Also just a quick note that when you first create products on Shopify, the "charge taxes" box is already checked off by default.

I wanted to make sure this didn't get lost in my reply above, so please let me know if there's any confusion around this.

I’ve imported some products from DSers and it’s not on by default. I bet it’s a setting in DSers that I have to turn on?

Thanks for your response, @Kit4!

I'm not familiar with that service so I can't say for sure. Though how are you importing these products? Is it through an app or CSV?

If it is CSV then you can change the default value to "true" as I shared above. If it is within the app, I am sure there is some setting that you can double check. Have you tried connecting with the App's Developers
