Net sales showing incorrectly in Shopify Analytics

Net sales showing incorrectly in Shopify Analytics

Hi, I am trying to find net sales in shopify analytics but it seems to be showing incorrectly. Currently when I look at the 'total sales breakdown' (which I thought would show net sales), which subtracts returns and discounts, it adds on taxes/shipping and duties. The issue is that we rarely charge shipping and duties. For taxes VAT(25% in my market) this should be deducted from the gross sales. I currently have the entry level/cheapest Shopify plan.

1. Why is taxes/shipping/duties showing as a positive number when taxes should be deducted at the end? This is a bit confusing.

2. When I pull a report from of orders in a given time period, and filter away refunds, I can see the total number of sales and then manually deduct the VAT. This gives a completely different number (and most likely more accurate) than the 'total sales breakdown' shown in the analytics dashboard. Is there a way of getting this net sales figure (total sales after returns, discounts and VAT) directly in the dashboard or do I have to do a calculation like this each time?

Thanks for your help

The net sales analytics are totally off.  In addition to the questions asked above, return/refund was calculated double or triple of one return. This happened just today and the way it clearly showed how inaccurate this was and I could not believe my eyes.  The logic was so off and any kids could spot.

- I had one return processed and cancelled b/c of creating a wrong return label. After a hour of investigation, i found that return label could not be voided so I cancelled the return then created a new return for a correct return label. The analytics are shown this as 3 transactions for this one return, showing like refund had happened already with two refunds(-) and one sales(+) b/c of I cancelled the initial return for wrong return label. Even though it was plus and minus to balance out, the number of return analytics section showed this as 3 returns?

First of all, how can you return twice when there was one sale to return with?  Basically It was making a new sale and return again for the cancelled return. What kind of logic is this?

- Also I had an exchange order - just editing the order to replace with new item of a same price then shopify analytic registered this as return/refund.

- Then there was a return created and not yet return received - return label for this one was crrated outside of the shopify system and it was shown like it was refunded already.

What kind of analytics is this to show this messed up in math? I didn't realize this analytics was this off until today and SHOULD NOT BE USED. This is misrepresentation of your data and if you ever have to use this analytics to show your business data. Someone can also go against you using this analytics data trusting this analytics over your real data.

I contacted the Shopify and they told me that it is a known and on-going issue. The past version of shopify analytics worked way better. This type of inaccuracy is not to  be published by shopify for millions of paid merchants users. Please whoever set this version of analytics go back to school and take basic math, accounting and computing classes. It strongly demonstrated that the shopify developer team did not do perform any user testing before release of this analytics version.

It appears that they might have developed this analytics by combo mixing different pre-existing modules, so not knowledgable how this would perform in real time or compatible with the existing process or data. The support was very incapable to help, other than commiserate with me.

I think something similar is happening with my shop as well.  have you figured out what is the cause of this issue?

Shopify is in such dire need of hiring accountants to work alongside developers and I have said this multiple times in these forums.

Basic accounting principles are not taken into account. Financial summaries do not even show sales matching payments, it’s extremely frustrating.

This is still an issue. Shopify dont care about their customers as long as we pay. Non of the data is correct it always a mess.

It is from now on just some idiots that dont know how to do damage control, so the best way is not communicate about it.

Shame on you Shopify
