Nightmare setting up taxes for each country one by one - and no Netherlands-compliant options

Hi,

I am registered in the Netherlands and sell physical products (mainly books) to most countries globally.

This means:

a) I must charge VAT to all individual customers at 21%, wherever they are in the world.

b) I must charge a lower rate of VAT on book sales (6%)

c) When the order just contains a book or books, VAT on the shipping is also charged at 6% (Normally it would be 21%)

I have not found any way to achieve this in Shopify. I do not want to pay for a thirdparty app like Sufio.

It seems crazy that I ahve to go through every one of over 100 countries, adding exactly the same details and same overrides.

Also because it is not possible to override tax on shipping, based on the product being shipped, I don't think this will ever work.

Is Shopify really impossible for Netherlands customers to use legally?

Hi Simon,

Just stumbled across your post and I'm not sure if I can help, but I'm going t give it a go anyway.

a) I could be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure you don't have to charge BTW (VAT) for customers outside the EU. Sufio has has a handy VAT guide where this is explained clearly: https://sufio.com/articles/shopify/taxes/vat-eu-shopify

b) You can set VAT overrides in Shopify, so that book for example, don't have a VAT rate of 21% globally set in your store, but 6% You can read how here: https://help.shopify.com/manual/taxes/tax-overrides I think you already found this and it seems like a lot of work but if you set overrides on the book collection in your store, this is very doable.

c) This is a good one and I honestly have no idea. I would recommend just leave it at 21% or not charge taxes at Shipping.
