Financing, tax rates, and accounting
This has been an absolutely frustrating process. I am trying to complete a DOR tax filing for WA state in which the retail sales need to be reported. So, I pulled a payouts report, to see all the "sales" that should be recorded in QBs. Because the payouts are deposited into bank accounts as net sales minus fees, theoretically, that should align to the net sales on the orders includes in the payouts.
I pulled a total sales report for the dates that matched the sales included in payouts for Q4, and compared that to a payouts report for Q4. The numbers DO NOT MATCH, but they should. Among further comparison, there are a handful of orders for which the sales amount (from the total sales report) is higher or lower than the payment amount for the same order number (in the payments report). Again, these are only for the Shopify Payments.
Can anyone explain the reason for the discrepancy? As of right now, the amount deposited into the account is less than the net sales plus fees.
A good way to check is to pull a report of all transactions in Shopify Payments (including fees, refunds, and adjustments) and match it line by line to your orders. Also, exporting the payout details and orders separately to a spreadsheet and comparing them side by side might help pinpoint exactly where it’s off.

That's what I dodged. And the amounts are still off. I identified several orders where the Shopify payment total differs from the payout total for the same order. I have tried contacting support... for 4 weeks with no help.
Hi Dyeshadb,
I'm currently having the same issue, so naturally, I went searching and found this post.
I found the reason my payouts are significantly less compared to total sales... I hope you're sitting down.
Shopify has not been payout out the taxes and shipping revenue charged to my customers. They've been paying out the pre-tax amount for the products only.
So far, I have found they owe me and my business approx AUD$30,000.
Now the fun part begins. They're claiming that the "Shipping Revenue" is actually shipping charges, which I fully dispute because I receive separate bills if I create a shipping label in Shopify (I no longer do this, but at the time, I was).
They're also claiming to pay the tax on my behalf to the Australian Tax Office. However, this is nearly impossible because they do not have my Aust. Business Number. They also don't know how much to pay...
Funny isn't it... they got caught, and I've proved it several different ways... but they're still fighting!
I hope you don't have the issues anymore, but if you do, I hope this helps.
