Financing, tax rates, and accounting
Hi there,
I'm confused as to why my California-based buyers are not seeing state sales taxes at checkout.
I have a CA-based nexus set up in Shopify: Shopify Admin > Taxes > Tax Rates > United States > physical presence is set to my California zip code. State tax is set to 7.25% and "Calculate taxes automatically" is enabled.
My "All taxes are included in my prices" is DISABLED as I'd like Shopify to charge my customers sales tax directly and automatically, when needed.
However, I have yet to see a tax line item on my checkout page. I've tried a few CA based addresses and nothing changes.
For what it's worth, I'm offering free shipping on all items (we're dropshipping so I've adjusted prices accordingly).
What am I doing wrong here? Why doesn't my checkout screen show sales tax?
Thanks!
Hi, Aashay.
Leon here from Shopify Support.
I've had a look at your store and the settings as you've set them up in Settings > Taxes looks correct, there are no changes required there. The issue with taxes not being charged on your products is actually on the products themselves. Each product has a checkbox which says "Charge taxes on this product" and those are not checked in your store. You can toggle these in bulk really quickly by using the Bulk Product Editor.
To fix the tax settings on your products, just go to Products > Select all > Edit Products > Add field > Charge Taxes. This will display each products tax settings allowing you to go through them quickly.
I hope this helps!
Have a great one.
Leon

Boom! It was a lot of clicking (A "select all" would be nice on this page) but that's exactly what I needed to do. I knew I was missing something. All good to go now! Thanks Leon!!!

Hi, Aashay!
This is Max from the Shopify Team.
Glad you were able to make this change using the bulk editing feature. For options that you want to tick on or off in bulk, I'd suggest using th is trick - click the cell of an item you'd like to change and then shift+click the last cell to select all cells in a row. Once they are selected, you can click the box on or off all at once. Check out this video for an example from my test store.
I'd also suggest checking out this help doc for some more tips on how to edit products in bulk. These options are quite similar to working within a spreadsheet!
That being said, the select all box at the top would definitely come in handy. I'll pass that along to our team directly. If you have any more questions or feedback, please feel free to contact us again!
Cheers,
Max

Hi, Span!
This is Max, again.
It looks like the checkout you are sharing is calculating taxes already.
If the amount of taxes being charged is not correct please review the tax settings (Settings > Taxes), and feel free to share some more details on what you have implemented and why this order is not complying with that. This added information could help us pinpoint the issue.
Are you having some issues implementing a discount code into this shop? If so, you'd want to review the conditions set for this discount. This includes not only the value of the discount, but also the date rage it is valid for and the number of times it can be applied. Check out this page for some more information on creating discounts!
Feel free to reply back here or contact support directly.
Best,
Max
