Is setting up a manual collection the only way to charge a flat tax in Shopify?

I'm a new Shopify User currently in the setup phase of our store.

Our situation...

We are remote sellers(living in Illinois) and selling in Texas.  We applied for and received a Texas Use Tax Permit.  Additionally, we signed up for the SLT(Single Local Use Tax) tax to simplify the tax rate that is charged.  In essence, it means all orders shipped to Texas will be charged a flat 8% tax.  Local/county taxes dont matter, it's always 8% tax.

Question that I have...

In Shopify, it seems the only way to override the system to charge the 8% tax is to set up a Manual Collection with all products.  Is this correct?  Doesn't seem the best as we will need to add products manually to the Collection as we add products to the store.  Anyone know if this is correct or if there is a better way?

Thanks in advance - really appreciate this group and the things I've learned here!

Craig

Hi @harp2424,

Thanks for getting in touch. Am I right in thinking that you'll be charging this 8% flat tax rate to Texan customers on all of your products? If so, you can create an automatic collection that can be used for tax override purposes, as opposed to manually having to add new products to this collection continuously.

To do this, create a new automated collection and set the condition to be that all products with a price greater than 0 are included:

As all products should have a price of 0 or above, every product in your store will be added, as will any new products you add. Once this collection has been created, you can use it for the purpose of the tax override.

I hope this explains things but please let me know if you have further questions.

Kind regards,

Victor,

Thank you so much for the quick and detailed reply.  Yes, 8% to all Texas customers. That is great that you suggest an automated collection.  It does, however, contradict what i found in the Shopify Help Center(shown below).  Maybe an enhancement was made to allow for automated collections?  Just making sure before I set this up.  Thanks again, Craig

Create a product tax override

Creating an override for products is a two-step process. You first create a collection that includes the products that have a different tax rate. Then you specify in what region the override applies and its rate.

For details on collections, refer to Collections.

Steps:

  1. Create a collection:

    1. From your Shopify admin, go to Products > Collections.
    2. Click Create collection, and then enter a name for it.
    3. Under Collection type, select Manual
    4. Click Save collection.

For forecasting, in any case, you need the help of specialists in the economic sphere. I had such a situation at the firm that I simply did not agree on the amounts in the turnover sheet, and this is usually very bad and in General because of this you can go to prison. I decided to turn to specialists in predicting the future of your company because one of their services was auditing. And I just needed professional auditors.

Hi @harp2424,

My apologies, I actually got this wrong—after a second look here, it turns out it is indeed no longer possible to use an automatic collection for a tax override, and it would need to be a manual one used for this purpose. In terms of updating it with products, you can update the collection via CSV and also through the bulk editor, if indeed you're adding numerous products to the override collection at once.

Thanks Victor.  Thats a bummer, but thanks for the confirmation.  Would love to see this be an automatic collection in the future! Craig

This is also an issue for us. We are in New Mexico. We are in the county, but shopify want to charge tax from the near by city. They are also charging us the sales tax from the city for their service. I can not get an answer to my issue. How do I get shopify to stop charging us the wrong tax and why can not you add you county to the sales tax and not have to change it for ever product? We have few 1000s products.
