Dear Shopify Team,

My business is based in Bulgaria, and we have been using Shopify for almost a year now. As we continuously expand into new markets, including Greece, Romania, Croatia, and Hungary, we are facing significant challenges due to the lack of Shopify Payments support for Bulgaria.

Unlike our competitors from Romania, who can seamlessly sell in Bulgaria, we are unable to process payments in their local currency. This forces us to create separate stores for each market, leading to relentless costs for unnecessary synchronization apps, design tools, and other functionalities—apps we’ve already paid for with our original store. Managing our operations through Shopify is becoming increasingly unsustainable, pushing us to consider alternatives like Magento.

I would appreciate a straightforward answer to a critical question: Is Shopify planning to introduce Shopify Payments for Bulgaria, and if so, when?

Instead of benefiting from a centralized platform with a high subscription fee, we are forced to manage multiple smaller stores, which multiplies costs and complexity. If there are no plans to bring Shopify Payments to our market, the lack of multi-currency support at checkout further places us at a competitive disadvantage.

Moreover, we are currently paying unnecessary transaction fees to both Stripe and Shopify when we could be paying a single fee through Shopify Payments. This situation contradicts the idea of supporting small and medium-sized businesses equally across all regions.

Your clarification and commitment to resolving this issue would greatly influence our future decisions regarding the platform.

Looking forward to your response.

Hey Kamen,

Shopify Payments looks like a frozen project. Nothing happens in the last 3-4 years. I am using Shopify for a 10 years already and I don’t believe they will lunch it in Bulgaria.

  • External checkouts are slow and include unnecessary animations.
  • So far, we haven’t found an external checkout that doesn’t differ from the prices in the store. Even if the difference is minor, there is always a discrepancy between the exchange rates we’ve set and the final amount the customer has to pay.
  • We’re concerned that Shopify might prohibit the use of external checkouts in the future, rendering all efforts pointless. Imagine merging 4 stores across 4 different countries, only to have Shopify discontinue external checkout support. Unfortunately, the risk is not justifiable for us.
