Shopify sales tax calculation on shipping

We have the setting selected for Shopify to calculate sales tax on shipping but it does not allow the admin to select which states require sales tax on shipping. How does Shopify assess sales tax only where required? It seems that KS requires sales tax on shipping but I've noticed that it's not being assessed. Appreciate anyone's feedback. Thanks.
