Financing, tax rates, and accounting
I own a physical shop and associated website that sells mainly products that have vat charged on them. However, I sell some books and children's clothing that are zero rated (0% vat rate). On every previous epos I have used the sales reports have me
Gross 0% sales
Gross 20% sales
Net 20% sales
20% tax total
This is what is required for reporting to HMRC. I cannot find where the 0% sales are reported. I can see the 20% tax amount in financial reports.
I am concerned that the gross sales and net sales include the 0% sales but these need to be split out. It wouldn't be practical with hundreds of transactions a day to do this - and I have selected the specific products as not ticked for "charge tax on this item" so it is being recorded somewhere.
Anyone point be where?
Don't expect to get Shopify support through the forum. It does happen some but isn't reliable.
I see that no one has replied so I'll tell you what I do or have done for taxes but we are in the US and we use Shopify plus so yours may be different. This does require some familiarity with Excel or another spreadsheet. I go to Analytics/Reports/Summary. Then from the summary report, select the time period and then click Total Sales and export to CSV file. Then run a pivot table and you can find total nontaxed sales and total taxed sales. Shopify reports are not very usable for these kinds of questions. You can also use the tax reports but be careful. If you aren't familiar with the report, you con easily get the wrong sales figures.
Hi @Nick82,
Keanna here from the Better Reports support team. I would recommend exploring our app Better Reports for this!
Better Reports can create a report that shows sales only for your taxable lines. This would exclude items which were charged 0% tax to ensure you're only considering gross/net sales for the taxed sales.
In addition to custom reporting, Better Reports offers more than 80 built-in reports that cover your most common reporting needs including sales, current inventory, refunds, payouts, and more. We can also help create custom reports to automate much of your daily workflows. All reports can be scheduled at a set cadence to email or Google Sheets or exported to Google Sheets, HTML, PDF, Excel or CSV.
I encourage you to install Better Reports and start your free 14-day trial and I'll be happy to set this up for you.
