Hi, @MarisueJames!

Thanks for your post. You can find the steps to set up taxes on your store in this help document. If you're already set up to collect taxes in the regions you're registered in and you believe the taxes were calculated incorrectly on your orders, you can get in touch with us through the Help Center and we can investigate further!

Please let me know if there's anything else I can help you with.

Hello @MarisueJames ,

You can try to follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings -> Tax -> Tax region -> Choose Canada
  2. Make sure that the "Enable taxes" checkbox is selected.
  3. Under "Provincial tax rates," select the provinces that you are required to charge HST in. In your case, this would likely be all provinces except for Alberta, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and the Yukon.
  4. For each province where you need to charge HST, enter the HST rate in the "Provincial tax rate" field. For example, for Ontario, the HST rate is 13%.
  5. Save and apply

Hope this can help you out.

Jen from TrueProfit.

Hi, @Serdar2023!

Thanks for getting in touch. I recommend checking out our Canadian Taxes Reference which has very useful information on how tax collection works.

Canada has a 5% goods and services tax (GST) that applies to most sales. Some provinces either charge an additional provincial sales tax (PST), or use a harmonized sales tax (HST) that includes the GST. Ontario is a province that uses HST.

The four provinces you see have separate PST rates, which is why there's the option to collect those separately, in addition to GST/HST.

If you still have questions after reading over that help document, just let me know. Thanks again!

Hi, @Serdar2023!

Thanks for getting back to me. I understand the issue and I apologize if you thought my answer was generic.

The reason you're not able to select Ontario as an option is likely because you already added Ontario/Canada as a region to collect taxes. When doing so, the only further options that appear are the provinces with separate PST rates (BC, Manitoba, Québec, and Saskatchewan).

To rectify this and ensure you're collecting the correct taxes, you can delete the existing tax rate, and then add Ontario, as shown in these screenshots:

Once you've added the region, sales tax is automatically calculated and applied to orders.

Let me know if you have any other questions or need further assistance with this!

I really don't think they understand or see the issue. My store isn't charging the full HST either and only charging the 5% on all products. Did you find a resolution to this by any chance? Thanks

Hey there, @kevinpang0524. Thanks for taking the time to reach out to the Shopify Community Forums on this thread for some assistance with your tax situation! My name is Imogen. It's good to meet you!

It's difficult for us to troubleshoot tax questions here in the Community as we're unable to authenticate users, meaning we can't access your store to look at your current tax setup. Typically, issues with taxes not being collected is a result of the tax setup not being completed as it's meant to be. As this thread is related to Canadian Taxes, I'll link our Help Doc on the topic of Canadian Taxes here. We also have this resource here that talks about how to successfully set up your Canadian Tax settings. You'll want to make sure that you have set up regions for the regions of Canada that you're registered to collect taxes for. You can do so using the following steps (taken from the setting up Canadian Taxes help doc I linked above):

From the Shopify admin, go to Settings > Taxes and duties.

  1. In the Countries/regions section, click Canada.
  2. In the Sales tax section, click Collect sales tax.
  3. Select a region in which you are registered.
  4. In the Tax number box, enter your tax number. If you have applied for a tax number, but don't have one yet, then leave this box blank. You can update it when you receive your number.
  5. Click Collect sales tax.
  6. Optional: To add more regions and account numbers, click Collect sales tax.

If you have appropriate created your regions and are still experiencing this issue, then please reach out to our Authenticated Support Team via our Help Center. This will allow us to get you authenticated, access your tax set up in real-time, and do some more in-depth troubleshooting than we can do here in the Community.
