Alternative Payment Method and Coin Base Test Mode Issue

Alternative Payment Method and Coin Base Test Mode Issue

I setup an Alternative Payment Method using Coin base and set the Alternative Payment Method to be "Enable Test Mode", however, when I made the first test payment it actually charged my coin base account.

Questions:

1. Is there an open issue for tracking the fix for this?
2. How do I perform a refund since Shopify things it is a test payment but it was not?

Hey, @jakez15.

Thanks for reaching out and for these details. I appreciate it and I’m here to help.

From my experience, your store should have the ability to “Enable test mode” with Coinbase.

Here is a screenshot of what this looks like from my test store:

When Coinbase has test mode enabled, an error message should appear saying “Test Order: Your payment gateway was in test mode when this order was created” on the order.

If you go into the Orders page in the admin and select the order, do you see the same error message? Let me know what happened and I can look into this with our technical team for you.

If you’re looking to refund the order in the Shopify admin, here is our help doc with the steps to do this: Creating a refund. When you refund an order, the refund should be sent to the original payment method.

Have you taken a look at the documentation for Coinbase? If you haven’t, I recommend taking a look. I also suggest reaching out to Coinbase directly should you have any additional questions about their payment gateway.

Thanks for the info Tira. The information you provided is exactly what I did and I expected the end result to be a test transaction, however, the transaction was definitely not a test transaction and crypto is being exchanged which should not happen. Unfortunately, the refund does not work through Shopify in this scenario because Shopify thinks it was a test transaction so the only way to refund is directly through Coin base Commerce which adds more network fees on top of the original transaction.

There is certainly an issue here and it would be great for someone from the shopify engineering team to look at since we have to use really crypto to test out the alternative payment method for Coin base.

Thanks for clarifying @jakez15. This is helpful.

I chatted with our technical team with the details that you've provided and it looks like this would be outside our scope of support. Anything that you see inside this "Edit" box with Coinbase would be supported by Coinbase, and I recommend reaching out to their support for assistance. I suggest copying and pasting the link to this Shopify Community thread so that they are aware of the troubleshooting that you have tried.

Here is their webpage where you can send them an email or give them a call.

Please keep myself and the Shopify Community updated with what happens!

Cheers,

Why is this a Coin base issue if Shopify is incorrectly marking the order as a test order and showing in the UI that the Alternative Payment Method for Coin base is in Test Mode?

That's a great question, @jakez15.

I've checked with our technical team on this for you and the options that appear in the Shopify admin after clicking the "Edit" button on the Coinbase alternative payment gateway is provided by the integration provided by Coinbase.

I think it would be best to start an investigation with the gateway, as they can check into things for you and then if needed, please reach out to us.

What are your thoughts?
