Can i collect subscription fee for my shopify app using third party payment gateway like stripe?

As a Shopify app developer will I be able to use a third-party payment gateway like stipe to collect subscription fees for my application. Is it mandatory to use Shopify Billing API to do that. We already have tight coupled payment with stipe. Its a huge effort to change to Shopify Billing API for launching the App on Shopify.
