When it comes to web design, even the smallest detail can have a huge impact on your conversion rates. Whether you’re making the final touches to your online store, or you’ve already launched; adding a favicon is one of those small details you don’t want to miss!
What is a favicon?
A favicon is a small square image that represents your brand in the browser tab. Typically favicons feature a logo, the first letter of the company name or simply an image that reflects the specifics of the website it represents.
The word “favicon” is a shortening of the phrase “favourite icon”. It is also known as a shortcut icon, website icon, tab icon, URL icon or bookmark icon. If you look towards the top of your browser, I am sure you will see plenty of favicon tabs, including the one from the Shopify Community Blog!
The term “favicon” is used to describe a file containing a small icon that is associated with a specific website. The icon is added directly to the website or theme’s coding and will appear on the tab next to the meta title. The icons are also added to the bookmark list to help mark the pages visually.
Remember logos are important! They can increase your brand awareness and allow your audience to easily remember your brand name. In addition, they have the potential to ingrain your logo and brand in your customers' memory.
A favicon is a great way to inform your potential customers that they have landed on your company page. It can also assist with making your customers feel more secure about their purchases.
What is the recommended size for the image?
When creating a favicon, the ideal size is either 16x16 pixels or 32x32 pixels. If your image is too large, then Shopify will automatically reduce the image to 32x32 pixels when you upload it to your online store.
Keep in mind that these images are displayed quite small, so it’s good to make sure that the image you use is readable.
How to add a favicon to your online store?
All Shopify themes have an option within the Theme Settings to add a favicon directly to your online store browser tab.
If you navigate to the Theme Editor by selecting Online store > Themes > Edit theme within your Shopify admin, you can select the Theme Settings towards the bottom left of the page to see the section titled Favicon. This will allow you to upload the image of your choice.
Once the image has been selected and uploaded, you can save the changes you have made and navigate back to your online store. You can now view the new favicon located on your browser tab.
You’ve now taken an important step to help your customers identify your brand and provide a sense of security while shopping with a brand they trust!
